An Ode to the Block

2024

Currently on view at Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens, NY through September 5th, 2024.

"An Ode to the Block" reflects on the essence of 165th Street Mall a.k.a. The Coli Block, honoring its culture in the middle of change. Through an editorial photoshoot, soundscapes and narratives of departing shop owners, it pays homage to the blocks culture. For decades, this block has been more than a location; it's been a place of diverse cultures, self-made traditions, and fashion; a runway for streetwear and a backdrop for back-to-school shopping rituals. From school uniforms to braided hairstyles, every corner held memories. Yet, as developments take over, the block faces transformation; threatening its character, signaling the end of an era. "An Ode to the Block" stands as a tribute to its past, present, and future; a legacy of memories and a call for dialogue and reflection in the face of change.

A trip to the block for back-to-school shopping was tradition for Queens kids, myself included. Uniforms, sneakers, clothes, and new bookbags were tokens of the block and crucial for surviving the school year. Mazing through the bus terminal to get to the bus or stopping to get your hair braided turned the bus terminal into more than just a rest stop. The “$40 sneakers” recording blaring through speakers where base never existed, gave the block a soundtrack that can be heard from one end to the other. As new developments make their way to the block, and businesses face displacement, the culture of the block is on the precipice of being forever altered.

"An Ode to the Block" is a tribute to the past, present, and future of a major part of the Jamaica, Queens community. Through this project, my hope is to create a lasting legacy that not only preserves the memories of the block but also serves as a catalyst for dialogue and reflection.
